Thinking about paying for Casper prep? You might want to read this first.
The Casper test has become a buzzword across pre-dental forums, YouTube ads, and aggressive email campaigns. Companies are now offering Casper prep tools, courses, and full-priced packages that claim to boost your score.
But here’s the truth most of them won’t tell you:
Very few dental schools actually require Casper.
What Is the Casper Test?
Casper (Computer-Based Assessment for Sampling Personal Characteristics) is an online situational judgment test that assesses how applicants respond to ethical dilemmas and interpersonal challenges. It evaluates things like empathy, professionalism, and decision-making — not academic content like the DAT.
The test consists of video- and word-based prompts. Students answer either through short essays (typed) or short videos (spoken). It is offered by Acuity Insights and graded using a combination of human raters and AI models.
Do Dental Schools Really Require It?
According to The Successful Match and direct school website reviews, very few U.S. dental schools currently require Casper for general applicants.
🪠 Confirmed as of 2024–2025:
-
UCLA School of Dentistry — Casper is only required for the PPID program, which is designed for internationally trained dentists seeking a U.S. DDS through advanced standing.
👉 If you're a U.S. or Canadian applicant applying to the standard 4-year DDS program, you do NOT need Casper.
❓ Often Listed, But Not Officially Confirmed on School Websites:
-
Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine
-
Indiana University School of Dentistry
-
University of Louisville School of Dentistry
-
University of Missouri–Kansas City School of Dentistry
-
California Northstate University College of Dental Medicine
-
University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry
⚠️ IMPORTANT: Casper requirements can change. Always check each school’s admissions page directly or email their admissions office before assuming anything.
So Why All the Hype?
Because hype sells.
Many companies saw an opportunity to profit off student anxiety. By making Casper sound like another high-stakes exam (like the DAT), they convince students that a costly prep program is essential.
In reality, Casper is:
-
NOT knowledge-based
-
NOT scored like a traditional test
-
NOT required by most dental schools
