What Are Pre-Dental Students Really Learning in School?
Published by Nancy Steen, Co-Owner, DAT Destroyer
In recent years, we’ve seen a trend that both surprises and concerns us: pre-dental students are arriving at their DAT prep completely unprepared in subjects they supposedly already took. Basic biology concepts are shaky. General chemistry principles are forgotten. And Organic Chemistry? Many students look like they’re hearing about SN1 reactions for the first time.
Dr. Jim Romano, who has been helping students succeed on the DAT for over 35 years, often finds himself asking students bluntly:
Did you even take this course in college?
It’s not sarcasm. It’s genuine concern. Because too often, the answer is yes, they did take the class. But what did they actually learn?
The Problem Isn’t the Students – It’s the System
We’re not here to blame students. Today’s pre-dental students are hardworking, passionate, and willing to put in the effort. But somewhere along the way, many have been shortchanged by a system that rewards memorization and shortcuts over real understanding.
We’re seeing:
• A heavy reliance on YouTube summaries, AI-generated notes, and test bank websites
• A “just tell me what’s high-yield” mindset
• Less emphasis on foundational problem solving and critical thinking
• Fewer challenging in-person lab experiences and deep discussions
The result? Students are showing up for the DAT with huge gaps in their science foundation — and many don’t even realize it.
The Real Work Begins Here
When students come to us, they’re often expecting a review. What they get instead is a complete rebuilding of their science education.
Dr. Romano always says:
This isn’t just DAT prep. This is the General Chemistry and Organic Chemistry class you should have had.
We teach from the ground up — no shortcuts. Because the DAT doesn’t reward guessing. Dental school certainly won’t. And most importantly, patient care depends on your ability to think, not just memorize.
It’s a huge effort. But it works.
Why We Hold the Bar High
Some students are shocked by how tough our books and classes are. But we do it because we care. We’re not here to coddle you. We’re here to prepare you.
And once you’re ready to rise to that challenge, something incredible happens. We see students go from 15s to 21s. We see underdogs beat the odds. We see students who thought they weren’t smart enough get into dental school with confidence.
Over and over again, students come back and say:
Dr. Romano taught me more in three months than I learned in four years of undergrad.
Final Thoughts
If you're feeling overwhelmed by DAT prep, you’re not alone. But the problem isn’t just the test — it’s the system that left you underprepared.
The good news? Those gaps can be filled. We’ll teach you. We’ll push you. But you have to be willing to let go of the shortcuts and show up ready to work.
Trust the process. Trust the results. Stay with the Destroyer.
