East Tennessee State University (ETSU) in Johnson City, Tennessee, offers pre-dentistry preparation and advising for students planning to apply to dental school. ETSU does not operate a College of Dental Medicine awarding a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degree.
ETSU also publishes a pathway to Lincoln Memorial University College of Dental Medicine and offers a separate Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene program. These are different educational routes with different application requirements.

Pre-Dentistry Preparation and Advising at ETSU
ETSU’s Medical Professions Advisement office supports students preparing for professional-school applications. Advising includes course planning, entrance-exam timing, school selection, applications and letters of recommendation.
Pre-dentistry preparation is not a DDS or DMD degree. Students complete undergraduate coursework at ETSU and apply separately to dental schools. Required courses and admission standards depend on the schools they choose.

ETSU’s Pathway to Lincoln Memorial University College of Dental Medicine
ETSU publishes an articulation pathway intended to help eligible students pursue a DMD at Lincoln Memorial University (LMU). The dental degree is awarded by LMU, not ETSU.
ETSU states that LMU reserves up to ten seats annually for pathway participants who meet the entrance criteria. Students may apply after successfully completing their third year at ETSU.
Participation does not, by itself, guarantee admission. Applicants must meet the applicable pathway and LMU admissions requirements and receive an admission offer from LMU. This pathway should not be confused with LMU’s separately described guaranteed-admission routes for its own undergraduate applicants.
Pathway Eligibility and Application Requirements
ETSU’s published ETSU–LMU pathway page lists 8 semester hours each in General Biology, General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Physics and English. The science requirements include laboratory work.
ETSU directs students to apply to LMU College of Dental Medicine through ADEA AADSAS and submit LMU’s supplemental application.
LMU’s undergraduate-entry admissions page also describes DAT, academic-performance, prerequisite-grade, dental-shadowing, recommendation-letter, technical-standard and screening requirements. Students should confirm which requirements apply to their pathway and application year directly with ETSU advising and LMU admissions.
The two official pages currently differ on English coursework: ETSU’s ETSU–LMU pathway page lists 8 semester hours, while LMU’s DMD admissions page lists 6 semester hours. Neither page explains this difference or confirms whether 6 semester hours satisfies the ETSU–LMU pathway.
Students considering this pathway should confirm the applicable English requirement directly with ETSU Medical Professions Advisement and LMU College of Dental Medicine admissions before finalizing coursework or applying. Do not assume that LMU’s published 6-hour requirement replaces the 8-hour requirement shown on ETSU’s pathway page.

ETSU’s Separate Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene
ETSU offers a Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene and an online degree-completion option. ETSU identifies its dental hygiene program as accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA).
Dental hygiene is a separate profession and educational program. A dental hygiene bachelor’s degree is not a DDS or DMD degree and does not qualify its holder as a dentist.
ETSU’s entry-level dental hygiene program has its own prerequisites and selection process. Its application page specifies ADEA DHCAS and the Admission Test for Dental Hygiene (ATDH), not the dental-school AADSAS and DAT route described above.
Applicants should consult the official ETSU Dental Hygiene program and dental hygiene application requirements.
ETSU Programs Versus DDS and DMD Dental Schools
ETSU pre-dentistry provides preparation and advising before applying to a dental school. ETSU dental hygiene provides a separate bachelor’s-level professional education. LMU College of Dental Medicine provides the DMD program associated with ETSU’s published dental-school pathway.
ADEA’s Tennessee dental-school listing names Lincoln Memorial University College of Dental Medicine, Meharry Medical College School of Dentistry and the University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Dentistry. It does not list ETSU as a DDS or DMD dental school.
CODA accreditation applies to specific programs. Dental hygiene accreditation is not evidence that a university operates a DDS or DMD program.

DAT Preparation for ETSU Pre-Dental Students
The DAT is relevant to students applying to dental schools that require it. Students should follow their target dental schools’ requirements rather than treating DAT scores as admission criteria for an ETSU dental school.
The American Dental Association identifies four DAT sections: Survey of the Natural Sciences, Perceptual Ability, Reading Comprehension and Quantitative Reasoning. The natural-sciences section covers Biology, General Chemistry and Organic Chemistry.
Plan your preparation around the official ADA DAT information. Review science concepts, practice quantitative problems and study the reasoning behind missed answers. Set aside dedicated preparation time for reading comprehension and perceptual ability as well.

There is no ETSU DDS or DMD tuition schedule to quote. ETSU undergraduate study, ETSU dental hygiene and LMU’s DMD program have separate costs.
Consult the relevant university’s current tuition, fees and financial-aid information. Do not apply dental-school tuition figures to ETSU pre-dentistry or dental hygiene.
