After talking to many students it was clear to us that there was a major challenge in the Quantitative Reasoning Section of the DAT/OAT. We kept hearing the same comment over and over, there isn't enough time.
Below are a few things students have said: 1. Since it's the last section of the test, I was tired and couldn't focus 2. Ran out of time, had to guess at the last problems before the screen shut down 3. The dry erase board and markers slowed me down and I couldn't save my work 4. I couldn't use a calculator 5. Too many word problems 6. I didn't know the trig functions 7. I didn't think it would be so hard so I didn't really prepare, I spent more time on the sciences After hearing all this from not only students in our classroom setting but from students across the country we set out on a mission to create the Math Destroyer, a project that has taken almost 2 years to complete. We didn't want just another Math Practice book; there are hundreds of those on the market. We developed problems geared for the test and something that would really help. During the last 2 years we have been testing the product with our own students and we have seen an overall increase in our quantitative reasoning scores. We weren't hoping for a perfect score or even close to it, but a score that would not be so low a student would have to repeat the whole test because of a low score in this section. The Math Destroyer contains 440 problems and detailed solutions, broken down into 11 separate tests that you can use to simulate the actual test. When developing the problems it was important that solutions be very clear and show the student the most efficient way to solve the problem. Remember, the number one reason students get low scores on the test is they do not finish. The big difference in our product and an online test type of product is once you have finished the test you can review the problems and the solutions and see where you have made your mistakes. We feel confident this will help you improve your score in this section. |
